"Mexico, late 19th century. Abelardo writes his memories of youth, inescapably intertwined with the 1847 North American invasion. The creative process is witnessed by his wife, a liberal woman who questions and motivates Abelardo, and is one of his main reasons for writing. It is known what happened then: half of Mexico's territory passed into the hands of the incipient empire; there were heroic episodes and shameful episodes, heroes, careerists, traitors.
