"Madrid, 1941: Carlos Lombardi, former criminal turned police officer and now a political prisoner for his loyalty to the Republic, is serving his sentence in Cuelgamuros working on the construction of the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum. A few days before Christmas, Lombardi is unexpectedly released and transferred to the Police headquarters, where he is received by his former chief Balbino Ulloa, whom years before he helped not to be kicked out of the corps by providing him with an improvised Popular Front card. The police of the New Regime need him to solve a case that, despite its scandalous nature, has not been leaked to the press: the murder of a priest whose throat has been slit, tortured and castrated. The horrendous crime seems to have been committed by the same murderer Lombardi was on the heels of in 1936, before the war. Pocos días antes de Navidad Lombardi es liberado inesperadamente y trasladado a las dependencias de la Policía, donde le recibe su antiguo jefe Balbino Ulloa, a quien años atrás ayudó a no ser expulsado del cuerpo facilitándole un improvisado carné del Frente Popular. La policía del Nuevo Régimen le necesita para resolver un caso que a pesar de lo escandaloso no se ha filtrado a la prensa: el asesinato de un sacerdote que ha sido degollado, torturado y castrado. El horrendo crimen parece haber sido cometido por el mismo asesino al que Lombardi pisaba los talones en 1936, antes de la Guerra.
